Think carefully before securing other debts against your home. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage.

Frequently Asked Remortgage Questions

Can I remortgage early?

Yes, you can remortgage before your current deal ends, but you’ll need to check for any early repayment charges (ERCs). These are fees your current lender may charge if you leave during a fixed-term period. However, some lenders allow you to start the remortgage process within a window (e.g. 3–6 months before your deal ends) without penalty.

Will I need a solicitor to remortgage?

Usually, yes - if you're switching lenders. A solicitor or conveyancer is needed to handle the legal work when moving to a new provider. Many lenders offer free legal services as part of their remortgage deals. If you’re staying with your current lender (a product transfer), a solicitor is generally not required.

What if I have bad credit - can I still remortgage?

Yes, it’s still possible to remortgage with bad credit. There are lenders that specialise in helping clients with poor or limited credit histories. You may need to provide more documentation, and the rates might be slightly higher, but a whole-of-market adviser can help you find suitable options.

How long does the remortgaging process take?

Typically 4 to 8 weeks. If you're staying with your current lender, it may take just a few days. Switching to a new lender usually involves a property valuation, underwriting, and legal work - your adviser will manage the process and help avoid delays.

Can I switch mortgage providers if I’m self-employed?

Yes, you can. Many lenders offer remortgage deals for self-employed individuals. You’ll generally need to provide 1–3 years of accounts or SA302s, and proof of consistent income. An adviser can guide you through the process and help you prepare the right documents.
