Background
A married couple approached us for advice about protecting their family's financial future. Following a full review of their circumstances, we recommended a life assurance policy that would have provided financial security in the event of death or terminal illness. The policy was designed to mitigate a large potential inheritance tax liability.
The underwriting process was more complex than usual, but after working closely with the insurer, we successfully secured an offer of cover.
One of the most common things we hear after recommending protection is:
"We'd just like to think about it."
It's an understandable response. Buying life assurance or critical illness cover isn't an exciting purchase, and it's natural to want time to consider your options.
Recently, however, we experienced a situation that perfectly illustrates why timing matters.
After a detailed review, we recommended protection for a lovely couple. The application wasn't straightforward, but after working with the insurer, we successfully obtained terms that would have protected their family.
The recommendation was to arrange cover that could have repaid their mortgage and helped provide financial security if the unexpected happened.
The clients decided to wait.
Days turned into weeks, and weeks into months. Life got busy, and the decision remained on hold.
Sadly, during that time, one of the clients was diagnosed with a serious medical condition.
Had the policy been in force, it would have provided valuable financial support at one of the most difficult times in their lives.
Instead, because the cover had never started, there was no policy to claim against. Following the diagnosis, obtaining equivalent cover was no longer possible.
This isn't a story about blame. None of us can predict what tomorrow will bring.
It's simply a reminder that protection only works if it's in place before it's needed.
We insure our homes, our cars and our holidays against events we hope never happen. Protecting our income, our mortgage and our loved ones deserves the same consideration.
Takeaway
Protection is one of the few financial products you hope never to need. But when it is needed, it is already too late to arrange it.
The cost of waiting is rarely measured in days or weeks - it can be measured in lost opportunities, financial hardship, and the inability to protect the people who matter most.
If you've been meaning to review your protection or have been putting off a decision, perhaps now is the right time to revisit it.
After all, the cost of waiting is sometimes far greater than the cost of the cover itself.
